Winter Holiday Workshop
Our latest holiday workshop was held on July 18 in the Shoalhaven. Students from Years 6-11 from 4 regional schools gathered on the University of Wollongong campus in Nowra for a full-day debating and speaking workshop. The schools were Bomaderry High School, Vincentia High School, Illawarra Sport High School, and Ulladulla Public School.
The workshop focused on effective speech making and debating techniques. Activities included students delivering a short speech where they had to prove the value of something important to them, a game of ‘Policy Ping-Pong’ where they gave quick points and responses to a specific debating topic, and a playful group activity where they developed and tried to ‘sell’ an inventive product in a presentation to the class. At the end of the day, students split into teams to use what they’d learnt in two full debates.
Thanks to generous funding from the Office for Regional Youth, the day was free for all students, with morning tea and lunch provided. The University of Wollongong also supported the workshop through use of their excellent facilities free of charge.
