  • Explanation

In debates, we will often have a question about who is responsible for what, or who should be given responsibility for a new task because of a new policy or shift in policy.

“That we should ban advertising aimed at children” — should regulating this be the responsibility of the parent, child or the government?

These questions are important in our day to day lives — who is responsible for something now? Should they be responsible for it? If not them, who else?

    Common mistakes

    — Assuming that responsibility and age go hand in hand without proving it!

    — Spending too much time talking about biology/brain development.

    — Forgetting to analyse different types of responsibility that we have at different ages — 16 for consent, 18 for voting, 22 for welfare, 21 for drinking in the states.

    Conclusion

    — Very common question in terms of who does what in primary debates.

    — Don’t forget that parents and kids aren’t the only ones with responsibility — governments as well!

    — A great piece of material to form the ‘principle’ at the start of the case.
